Slender and flexible 24-fibre stranded cable

10 March 2004 Interconnection

Huber+Suhner has launched a new 24-fibre Twintube multifibre loose tube cable to satisfy new market needs. In fibre-optic technology, 24-fibre cable designs are very common and can be found in numerous applications. This puts great competitive pressure on manufacturers to offer technically sophisticated, but at the same time, cost-efficient products. For many applications, the stranded cable construction that was used up to now was oversized.

Huber+Suhner eliminated unnecessary cable elements such as dummy components and strength members, as well as the entire process operation of stranding. The result is the slender Twintube that takes up very little space in cable ducts and wall openings. It is also light, and small cable reels are sufficient to accommodate a given installation length. Being very flexible it allows tight bending radii, which again saves space. It also includes very little combustible material, should a fire occur.

The jacket of the Twintube is made of a PE or LSFHTM material. It envelopes two adjoining multifibre loose tubes containing up to 12 fibres each. The jacket material is suitable both for outdoor and indoor applications, and all common fibre types can be incorporated. The empty space inbetween is filled with glass filaments for strain relief and rodent protection. The manufacturing process for the Twintube eliminates the need for twisting the tubes so that the straightening of twisted tubes by hot air is unnecessary. This allows fast stripping of the insulation for splicing, which saves time and costs during installation.

Fast installation is a feature. Twintube fibre-optic cables can be laid or pulled into cable ducts, be buried in the earth or be installed loosely on the floor. The pre-assembled Masterline cabling system ensures fast and easy installation as well as direct connection. The LSFHTM variant meets high safety standards, maintaining its performance for over 90 minutes in case of a fire. Twintube with LSFHTM jacketing material is an ideal solution for cabling buildings and danger zones such as tunnels.
