Microwave absorbers

25 October 2000 Circuit & System Protection

With Murata's flexible absorbent materials, late design modifications can be avoided, says the company. Covering the frequency range from 0,1 to 2 GHz, they can be introduced at any stage in the sequence from design to delivery.

As miniaturisation of digital equipment progresses, the possibility of noise from coupling between devices increases. Such effects become apparent during design evaluation or in preproduction; however, it is hard to check 100% when there are high-speed digital or GHz frequency radio carriers around.

EMI filters and RF chip inductors are accommodated from the beginning, but in balancing the conflicting need to save space against the task of avoiding EMI problems, Murata says it is no surprise that the result is not always quite as expected. EMI-absorbing materials can provide that life-saving solution when the design is fixed and an EMI problem appears.

No changes have to be made to the layout and the fix can even be applied to products that are already in volume production. The silicon-based materials are flexible and can be held in place with adhesive tape. Thicknesses vary between 0,2 and 2,7 mm depending on the frequency to be suppressed, and custom sizes can be supplied on request.

Murata offers two materials: firstly the EA10 series for prevention of abnormal oscillation in high frequency modules, the suppression of interference between circuits and that of spurious spectra. Secondly, there is the EA20 series - this has high-m high-loss characteristics for suppression over a wide frequency band in digital products.
