Customisable keypad design

6 August 2008 Switches, Relays & Keypads

To address the need for more customised designs for electronic devices such as cellphones, remote security and access control and input units, Technological Rubber developed its ‘rubber to plastic’ moulding technology.

The base layer of these keypads is still silicone rubber, usually translucent for back-lighting, while the top layer is plastic. The top plastic layer gives a ‘hard’ feel whilst the silicone layer provides allowance for different activating forces and travel and enables a highly tactile feel to be developed. The finish on the keytops can be silvered, chromed and/or coloured.

One major advantage is that the silkscreen can be applied to the top surface of the silicone layer and then a transparent plastic layer moulded over the silicone. This gives complete protection to the silkscreen. Laser ‘nightlight’ engraving can also be used for the silkscreen.
