Fibocom’s already launched G510 now supports location based services (LBS) in South Africa. The module, which communicates via GSM/GPRS on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz bands, overcomes the limitations suffered by satellite positioning technologies like GPS indoors and in ‘urban valleys’ by obtaining longitude and latitude information from the base stations of wireless network operators in the neighbourhood.
The LBS functionality comes as a component of the G510’s software stack, and allows positioning data to be obtained through the execution of a simple command.
