RH and temperature sensors from Silicon Labs

19 November 2014 News

Silicon Labs’ second-generation relative humidity (RH) sensing solution – the Si701x/2x sensors – combine a standard CMOS mixed-signal IC with a proven technique of measuring humidity using a polymer dielectric film. It enables accurate RH sensing for home automation, HVAC, refrigeration, healthcare, remote monitoring, automotive and industrial equipment.

Compared to other discrete resistive or capacitive RH sensing elements, which must be combined with analog circuits for temperature compensation and signal conditioning, this approach not only lowers bill of materials cost and PCB space, it also increases reliability while lowering the risk of contamination.

The SMT compatible chips are supplied fully calibrated and with an optional filter cover for added protection against contamination. With a 3,3 V power supply voltage and 8-bit resolution, the sensors consume only 1,9 μW when taking one sample per second.

The Si701x/2x series maintains ±3% RH maximum accuracy from 0% to 80% RH and ±0,4°C temperature accuracy from -10°C to +85°C. It exhibits long-term RH drift less than 0,25% per year.

As for temperature measurement, two-zone temperature measurement is supported with programmable linearisation, which eliminates the need for an additional analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and compensation software in the system. Applications such as thermostats that require a second-zone temperature sensor can exploit this to efficiently measure the analog voltage of an external thermistor.
