Processor module for Linux development

22 July 2015 Computer/Embedded Technology

Paving the way for designers to create computers and open-source platforms to fit their own specifications, Pretoria-based Keystone Electronic Solutions developed the Blue Penguin CPU module.

Based on Guinnux – Keystone’s in-house version of Linux – its operating environment closely follows desktop and server Linux environments in order to create a familiar and predictable Linux development experience.

Available with a choice of DDR2 RAM capacities to suit varying needs, the board is only the size of a business card and runs off 3,3 V d.c. It comes with a Micro SD card slot, JTAG debug connector and can access a host of peripherals through the SODIMM interface, including two MAC/Ethernet interfaces at 10/100 Mbps each; four USART and two UART ports; 8-bit, high-speed multimedia card interface; two synchronous serial controllers; one SPI interface; three twin-wire interfaces; one CAN interface; one soft modem; two USB hosts and one USB device; 24-bit LCD with resistive touch and image sensor interfaces; 10 ADC channels; and GPIOs.

Guinnux, which comes pre-installed, provides access to an ever growing number of packaged applications and libraries, available for installation from the Guinnux web repository. Onboard support for scripting languages such as lua, PHP and Python allows for immediate onboard application development and deployment without the use of cross compilers. A cross compile toolchain and development libraries are also available. Keystone offers customisation tools so that clients can run their own software on the front end.
