Rugged connectors for PV systems

20 April 2016 Interconnection

Molex’s rugged, IP67-sealed SolarSpec DC connectors are designed for direct connection to solar junction boxes, field installations and photovoltaic (PV) grid wiring.

Offering exceptional efficiency, the contact resistance of the connector is <0,5 milliohms. The contact can handle as much as 30,0 A and accommodates 2,50 mm2 and 4,00 to 6,00 mm2 (#14 and #12 to #10 AWG) cable. They remain fully sealed when mated and have an enhanced strain relief design to avoid cable overstressing and ensure the integrity of the cable sealing.

SolarSpec DC connectors are IP67-sealed to protect against the ingress of dust and water, and the housing body is resistant to UV and ozone damage. Simple snap-lock mating allows for quick and easy assembly, in the factory or field, with an audible click to ensure successful mating. The innovative touch-proof safety design ensures that installers and maintenance engineers are protected from electrical current even during mating and decoupling operations. In addition, the moulded ribs of the housing surface allow for secure gripping, especially while wearing work gloves.

The NEC 2008 (690.33) and NFPA 70 US-code compliant solution is an innovative internal locking mechanism that prevents accidental or unauthorised decoupling of the connector during service in the field. It is protected by latch guards and therefore no additional protection sleeve is needed.

The pin (male) and socket (female) connectors are available individually, as standard or custom cable assemblies, or supplied together with the SolarSpec junction box from Molex for PV panels. They are compliant with the most stringent quality standards for solar applications by TÜV and UL to ensure long service life in harsh environments. A service tool is available to release the internal safety locking mechanism, together with a ratchet-design crimp hand tool for easy termination.
