SAA on a high with cable harness tester

SAA's Electrical Department, responsible for the manufacturing and repair of wiring harnesses for aircraft and the testing of those wires, has reaffirmed its confidence in the Signature Cirris 1000H+ cable harness tester by expanding the system from 128 to 384 points. The equipment was supplied to the department by leading supplier of test and measurement equipment to the local industry, Spescom MeasureGraph (SMG).

The Electrical Department uses the Cirris 1000H+ extensively for cable/harness testing. Supervisor Callie van der Merwe explains: "We test harnesses assembled for both the local and overseas aircraft markets. By using this product we have been able to elevate our facility to the recognised industry standard.

"The test set, although very specific in certain aspects, has greatly simplified the testing of products. It has allowed us to produce 100% technically identical products which means the quality we deliver has also improved.

"Furthermore, the 1000H+ uses a special high-speed algorithm to speed up HiPot testing (1000 V d.c.). In most cases this can result in the test being 10 or more times faster than other high voltage cable harness testers. It automatically performs a connection resistance, capacitance and diode tests as well as insulation resistance/dielectric breakdown tests. This level of testing ensures quality by eliminating possible future failures. Assemblies that pass simple continuity testing may fail later due to weak insulation, poor terminators or other problems.

"The Cirris is small and compact compared to the outdated product that we used previously. The Cirris is also simple and easy to program. Test results are given audibly and visually with wire identification at a touch," concludes van der Merwe.

SMG Product Specialist, Jeroen Dubbelman, agrees: "Cable applications are very diverse which makes it difficult to find one set of decision rules that works for all. Some industries require high throughput, low cost and basic testing. Others require extensive testing of safety critical wiring where cost is a secondary consideration. Cirris has a solution for all these needs."
