ISO 9000:1994 standards expired

28 January 2004 News

The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) has announced that all ISO 9000:1994 certifications/registrations have ceased to have validity as of 15 December 2003.

This follows a statement by the International Accreditation Forum that all accredited certification/registration of quality management systems to ISO 9001:1994; ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994 expired on 15 December 2003 in preparation for the withdrawal of those Standards by ISO in favour of ISO 9001:2000.

Organisations that base their purchasing decisions on the fact that their supplier is third party ISO 9000 certified/registered are reminded that the only recognised form of conformity of an ISO 9001 Quality Management System is now an accredited certification/registration to ISO 9001:2000.

The senior specialist: Strategy and Systems Development in Standards SA, a division of the South African Bureau of Standards, Geoff Visser, comments: "The three-year period between the 2000 edition being published and the 15 December 2003 deadline was basically a transitional period that allowed companies to move across to the 2000 standard. From now, the only current standard is the ISO 9001:2000 version, with no other conflicting standards in existence."
