Modular current transducers for railway applications

5 November 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

LEM has strengthened its range of current transducers for railway applications with the introduction of the LTC family. The first members of the family, the LTC 600 and 1000-S, are intended for 500 and 1000 A r.m.s. nominal measurements respectively. The units produce an output current that is an exact representation of the input current waveform. Their modular design allows them to be mounted in several different ways, either horizontally or vertically with only around 517 cm3 of volume occupied (compact design 110 x 100 x 47 mm). They can be provided with or without an integrated busbar, adding further mounting versatility.

A dual fastening mode is offered as standard for the secondary connections: either 4 x M5 threaded studs for a robust connection or 4 x Faston (6,3 x 0,8 mm) for quick installation. A range of versions is available on request to accommodate almost all the connection types used in traction applications.

Influence of currents from adjacent conductors can be minimised by rotating the electronics within the case of the transducer unit, to keep the Hall-effect sensor chip as far as possible from the source of interference. All units are shielded as standard. With an operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C, and a high isolation test voltage of up to 13,4 kV rms/50 Hz/1 min, the transducers comply with the European Traction Standards EN50155 and EN50124-1 (insulation levels, creepage and clearance distances).
