Still leading the way in wireless communications

Trinity Telecomms has been the distributor of Wavecom's GSM-based products for seven of the 10 years that Wavecom has been in existence. Receiving the best distributor award for two consecutive years (2001 and 2002), Trinity not only marked South Africa's authority in the GSM market, but also carries the superiority and quality of the Wavecom brand as displayed through the confidence of the local market.

Wavecom's product range is diversified by the different applications. Vehicle tracking and fleet management, telemetry and telephony are so far the most prominent fields that the Wavecom products have been used in. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) integrate these products as components of their 'black boxes' or single units into their end-user solutions requiring user interface, or standalone intelligent devices.

The Wismo Pac has been optimised for use as the hardware platform for Wavecom Feature Phones and Compact Phones Development Labs as well as the Mobile Computing and PDA Development Labs. It is a designer's dream come true, as it provides all the freedom needed to invent the phones to hit the sweet spots in targeted markets. The manufacturing processes can easily be automated thanks to the patented 'Chip-Pac' technology that allows for automatic positioning and BGA soldering during the manufacturing process.

At the heart

The Wismo Quik is the foundation that all Wavecom modems are based on. The Wismo Quik module/engine is designed to fit applications where space limitations are a factor. The slim profile, less than 4 mm thick, makes it easy to slip the Wismo Quik into most handheld applications such as phones, PCMCIA cards, and PDAs. Through the 60-pin AVX connector, all the module interfaces and features can be accessed and customised to suit individual applications. The Wismo Quik module is optimised for use as the hardware platform for Wavecom Phone Development Labs, as well as Wavecom Mobile Computing, PDA, Automotive and Machine-to-Machine Development Labs.

The Wismo Quik forms the core of the two Wavecom modems, the Integra and the Fastrack. With the Integra board-mounted modem, users can find all the GSM/GPRS voice and data capability needed in a single, compact unit. Fully type-approved, the Integra offers state-of-the-art class 10 GPRS capacity and an embedded TCP/IP stack, for e-mail, Internet and other data communications usage. Reasonably small, the Integra modem enables developers and users to add full function wireless capability without redesigning existing systems. With Open AT development tools, applications can be embedded right on the platform using the built-in spare processing and memory capacity to eliminate extra components and subassemblies. The Integra modem has been optimised for use as the hardware platform for the Wavecom Machine-to-Machine Development Lab.

The Fastrack modem, housed in a rugged metallic casing, is built to withstand the toughest environments. This RS232 interface external modem is GPRS class 10 capable with an optional embedded TCP/IP protocol stack and is fully type-approved. The modem is dual band and designed for fax, data, SMS and voice applications.

Wireless future

With foresight, the Wavecom founders were investing wireless technology as early as 1993, believing the wireless market would flourish and extend into new markets for mobility. Today it looks as if that gamble has paid off for Wavecom. Two markets are emerging: first, that of the mobile telephony and second, one that groups all of the vertically integrated wireless markets: mobile multimedia products (computers and personal organisers), telemetry, etc.

The development of Wavecom's products calls for highly specialised technical know-how and experience in digital and radio frequency circuit design and microchip architecture, the design of realtime software and, most importantly, the optimal integration of these technologies. Typically, up to two-thirds of the development effort for a wireless communications application consists of writing software that integrates and manages the hardware components.

In order to keep pace with rapid technological changes and market pressures in the industry, Wavecom maintains a substantial programme of research and product development. This programme focuses primarily on adapting the products to evolving and new transmission standards. Wavecom also continues internal product development to further reduce the size of the WISMO modules, to reduce their power consumption and to enhance their functionality.

Trinity Telecomms is committed to continue offering its clients world-class telecommunications solutions through the WISMO technology.
