Low-profile wound-chip inductors

9 March 2005 Passive Components

Taiyo Yuden's NR series of low-profile wound-chip inductors are available in three alternative height dimensions from 1 mm to 1,8 mm to optimise lower-profile 'designability'. The NR series is designed specifically for use in DC/DC converter choke-coil applications, an emerging industry trend driving the replacement of less-efficient charge pump power supplies. The NR series devices provide up to 30% higher rated current than conventional inductors of equal size, according to the company.

Providing a uniform 4 x 4 mm footprint, Taiyo Yuden's NR series wound-chip inductors are available in 1,0 mm, 1,2 mm or 1,8 mm device heights to remain within the critical vertical limits of key ICs in ultra-portable devices. They occupy a footprint of only 16 mm². To increase rated current, the company developed a unique ferrite-resin compound that, when applied to the exterior of the wound chip inductor, allows more space for the internal conductor, minimises heat generation and improves DC inductance characteristics. The result is a unique component structure said to achieve a 1,3 times higher rated current than conventional inductors of the same size.

Advances in current rating and size reduction are matched by improved shock resistance-tests of NR series products mounted on PCBs.
