LED lights for machine vision applications

8 March 2006 Opto-Electronics Products & Solutions

Westplex has been appointed the South African distributor for CCS, a Japan-based leader in the field of LED lighting for machine vision. With a range of over 200 types of highly professional machine vision lights, CCS says it can offer a lighting solution for every application.

The CCS product line complements Westplex's existing range of quality components for machine vision systems. These include Basler digital and smart cameras; Matrox frame grabbers, image analysis software, vision processors and smart cameras; Myutron precision lenses; Norpix streaming software; Phlox LED backlights; Cemarligne laser projectors; Fastec high speed cameras; and Redlake high-speed cameras.

The new CCS range includes: direct and indirect line lights and ring lights; indirect flat lights and coaxial lights; direct bar lights; flat-ring lights, low-angle ring/square lights; dome lights; collimated coaxial lights; high luminosity spotlights; super-uniform spotlights; and micro-fibre heads with light source.

The importance of good machine vision lighting

The importance of good and appropriate lighting for machine vision systems is often under-estimated by system integrators. There is a widespread feeling that the quality of lighting is not as important as that of the cameras and the image processing software, and that the additional expense of correct and consistent lighting is unjustified.

In fact the opposite is true, according to Westplex. The old principle of GIGO (garbage in = garbage out), applies to image-processing programs as much as to any other computer program, it notes. To make a stable and reliable measurement, one needs to capture images with sharp contrasts consistently, in spite of unwanted reflections, changes in work-piece position, changes in object material, and ageing, etc. Without a good initial image, the most ingenious and powerful image analysis algorithms will not be consistently successful.

With its expansive range of available lights, Westplex says it can ensure that there is a light source that is appropriate for virtually every application. In addition to this, its principal CCS also supplies digital and analog power supplies, filters, and lens attachment rings.
