New DC link capacitors

Wima's DC-Link MKP 4 capacitors are available with capacitances of 5 μF up to 75 μF and voltages of 450, 700, 900 and 1100 V d.c. They are constructed with a winding element of metallised polypropylene film boxed in a plastic case with self-extinguishing epoxy resin sealing.

These new capacitors are designed for use in DC Link applications in power electronics and are outstanding due to their high rated voltage per component, low dissipation factor (ESR) and very high insulation resistance. Due to their construction they are entirely self-healing in cases of breakdown and exhibit a high life-expectancy. The unpolarised contact configurations, in 4-lead version or with screw-on terminal lugs, guarantee safe contacts even at high current loads.

DC Link capacitors with plastic film dielectric are steadily replacing traditionally used electrolytic capacitors due to more severe electrical requirements in the DC intermediate circuit, such as increased voltages or increased AC converter switching frequencies. As an example, for physical reasons electrolytic capacitors can only be rated up to approximately 500 V d.c. Moreover, due to the high ESR of electrolytics, the AC current load at high frequencies leads to considerable dissipation/self-heating and thus severely limits the permissible current carrying capability.
