DC-DC converters with wide input ranges

15 October 2008 Power Electronics / Power Management

Many high power-density DC-DC converters on the market today have a narrow 2:1 input range of typically 9-18 V, 18-36 V or 36-72 V d.c. However, in military and avionics systems on board fighters, tanks, civil aircraft, missiles and similar platforms, harsh operational conditions are prevalent, including transients, spikes and dropouts.

To meet these requirements, the solution adopted by many designers consists of a 2-stage approach – a line conditioner or transient protection module and a DC-DC converter. However, this solution leads to additional cost and size on the board.

Gaia Converter has introduced a complete range of DC-DC converters with output power of 75 W, 100 W and 150 W, with wide input ranges of 9–45 V, 16-80 V and 120–480 V d.c. to address the military and avionics electronics market covering the variable input bus requirements of MIL-STD-704 or MIL-STD-1275 standards.

The complete series includes more than 300 different models with output voltages from 3,3 V up to 28 V d.c. with wide trim ranges. The modules are housed in standard industry size quarter brick and half brick formats, making them suitable for COTS applications. They have been qualified according to MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-202 environmental specifications to sustain stringent conditions.
