3,3 and 5 kW power supplies

18 August 2010 Power Electronics / Power Management

TDK-Lambda has added further models to its Genesys 3,3 kW and 5 kW, 2U format programmable power supplies.

The new 0–200 V d.c. output models, available in both 3,3 kW and 5 kW ratings, are suited for applications related to the testing of solar cell arrays, and for use in electrolysing sulphuric acid in water purification plants. Extending the Genesys 5 kW range, models with 0–400 V d.c. and 0–500 V d.c. outputs offer an option for use with the manufacture and test of flat-panel television displays, where high-power, high-voltage DC supplies are a common requirement. They are both suitable for industrial applications that utilise high-power halogen heaters which typically require between 200 V and 400 V to drive them.

As with all of the models in the range, these power supplies have three-phase inputs for operation from 170 to 265 V a.c. or from 342 to 460 V, and the 3,3 kW models are additionally available in single-phase versions suitable for operation from 170 to 265 V a.c. The new models feature active power factor correction and safety features including user-selectable safe-start and auto-restart options. With safe-start, the power supply returns to the last used settings after a power interruption, but with the output disabled. With auto-restart, the supply resumes normal operation without intervention after a power interruption, thereby meeting typical requirements for unattended use.

Common to all Genesys models is a built-in RS232/485 interface with which up to 31 power supplies may be controlled in daisy chain over an RS485 line. Analog remote programming is user selectable 0–5 V or 0–10 V via DIP switches on the rear panel. Other digital and isolated analog interfaces are optional: the IEEE digital interface is IEEE-488.2 and SCPI compliant, and a wide selection of LabVIEW drivers is available. Isolated analog programming options include either 0–5 V and 0–10 V, or 4–20 mA control. An LXI-compliant LAN interface is also available.

Higher-power systems can be realised by connecting up to four units in parallel. In advanced parallel configuration, the master unit reports total system output current, which means that the four units appear as a single power supply, increasing flexibility for system designers. CE marked in accordance with the Low Voltage Directive, Genesys conducted and radiated EMI conforms to EN55022-A, FCC-A. Safety approvals include UL60950-1 and EN60950-1. All models carry a five-year warranty.
