SMD electrolytic capacitors

11 May 2011 Passive Components

Panasonic’s FK series of +105°C SMD aluminium electrolytic capacitors delivers impedance values in the G-case size of 80 mΩ and in F-case size a maximum of 160 mΩ over the capacitor’s lifetime of 2000 hours at +105°C.

These low ESR values enable a ripple current of 850 mA at 100 kHz/+105°C. Panasonic offers FK series devices in voltage ranges from 6,3 V to 100 V and capacitance values ranging from 3,3 μF to 1500 μF.

Also available are the FK-A and FK-G series. FK-A has the ability to withstand higher soldering temperatures for lead-free reflow soldering. Devices up to 6,3 mm in diameter can survive peak temperatures of +260°C. The parts are available in voltage ranges from 6,3 V to 35 V and capacitance values ranging from 4,7 μF to 1500 μF. Medium-size FK-A devices (up to 18 mm in diameter) can survive peak temperatures of +245°C. They are offered in voltage ranges from 6,3 V to 100 V and capacitance values ranging from 47 μF to 6800 μF.

The FK-G series is supplied in voltage ranges from 6,3 V to 50 V and capacitance values ranging from 100 μF to 1500 μF with a lifetime of 5000 hours at +105°C.

Another SMD aluminium electrolytic capacitor offering from Panasonic is the FP series designed to deliver equivalent series resistance (ESR) values that rival polymerised organic semiconductor alternatives. The ESR value of a G-case size is only 60 m and an F-case size is a maximum of 80 m over the capacitor lifetime (which is 2000 hours at +105°C). This represents a reduction of nearly 50% in comparison with the FK series. These low ESR values enable a ripple current of 1190 mA at 100 kHz/+105°C.

FP series devices are currently offered in voltage ranges from 6,3 V to 50 V and capacitance values ranging from 10 μF to 1800 μF. Further CV values are under development. A supplementary advantage of the FP series is the components’ ability to withstand high soldering temperatures for lead-free reflow soldering. Devices up to 6,3 mm in diameter can survive peak temperatures of +260°C.

For applications that require high resistance to vibration and shock, diameter 8 mm and 10 mm parts of all the aforementioned series can also be supplied in an anti-vibration version, with special supportive terminals and a higher bottom plate socket. This design enables capacitors to withstand up to 30 G acceleration.
