Low-power multichannel single-chip CMOS RF transmitter

27 March 2002 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Chipcon has released a totally integrated RF transmitter for the 300 MHz to 1000 MHz SRD (Short-Range Device) frequency bands. Based on the same proprietary SmartRF02 technology platform as the recently-released CMOS CC1000 RF transceiver, the new CC1050 offers the same unique combination of high output power, low current consumption and low cost.

The CC1050 highly integrated transmitter requires only a minimum of external components, while low current consumption extends battery life. It is offered in small size TSSOP-24 package, making it suitable for applications with size limitations. Vice president of sales, Sverre Dalen Moen explains, "Since the carrier frequency is programmable in frequency steps of 250 Hz, customers are able to make cost-efficient multichannel systems in all European and US license-free frequency bands from 300 MHz to 1 GHz. The high output power of the CC1050 enables customers to achieve a very long one-way wireless communication link."

Says Geir Forre, Chipcon president and CEO: "As far as we know, this is the lowest cost, lowest power, multichannel RF transmitter available on the market...it is especially suitable for one-way multichannel, multi point-to-point wireless communication systems. The extremely flexible PLL synthesizer and internal PA enable very fine frequency steps and programmable output power. Used with our new CC1000 RF transceiver/receiver, the CC1050 transmitter provides a very long range, cost-efficient one-way communication link."

Key features of the CC1050 include 2,1 V to 3,6 V supply voltage, output power of +12 dBm at 433 MHz and +8 dBm at 868 and 915 MHz, data rates up to 76,8 Kbps, programmable carrier frequency, and very few external components. The circuit is intended primarily for the most commonly used frequency bands at 315, 433, 868 and 915 MHz but can easily be programmed for operation at any other frequencies in the 300 MHz to 1000 MHz range. This gives designers flexibility for design in a wide range of products for the worldwide market. Specified for use over -40°C to 85°C, the CC1050 is supported by the CC1050 Development Kit.
