C compilers said to be more 'affordable'

10 April 2002 Design Automation

Is there a vendor that offers C compilers for most of the mainstream microcontrollers (MCUs) available on the market at 'affordable' prices? According to Climax Electronics one needs to ask two questions: Firstly, consider a low cost microcontroller with 8 pins in an SOIC or DIP package, 1K byte of flash program memory and 64 bytes of in-system programmable EEPROM data memory, and ask; 'Can this microprocessor be programmed in C?' And secondly, consider a microcontroller with 64 pins in TQFP, and ask; 'Does one need a R12 000+ C-compiler or is there something else?'

A 'yes' to either of these means that one should consider looking at Imagecraft's C Compilers for Atmel's AVR range of microcontrollers, says the company. The AVR range has a new 8-bit MCU architecture that was designed in co-operation with C compiler experts to be C code efficient. Today, there is a broad expanding family of AVR MCUs with many built-in peripherals that the Imagecraft C Compiler supports.

The Imagecraft ICCAVR and ICCtiny compilers are ANSI C compliant and include a GUI editor, Application Builder, and a newly-launched Code Browser (ICCAVR version only) for more efficient navigation around the C code. The code generated is in a COFF or HEX file format for debugging (with AVR Studio) or programming into a device. The compiler also includes an assembler, linker and library tools for more efficient code development and management if revision control is of concern.

Imagecraft has been designing, developing and supporting compilers for over seven years. The Imagecraft range of C compilers can support the requirements of Atmel, Motorola and Texas Instruments MSP430. Fully functional 30-day evaluation copies of the compilers are available from www.imagecraft.com
