Piezo speakers

5 June 2002 Passive Components

Murata offers a speaker using the same technology as its piezo buzzer. Dynamic speaker types with their associated limitations can be replaced. In a surface mounting package, with a free-air cavity in the back, it can be mounted on the PCB like any other SMD according to the manufacturer.

The PKLCD1212R in 12 by 12 mm footprint allows packing in tape and reel for fully automatic processing aided by the gold flash electrodes for lead-free reflow soldering (260°C); or they can be attached with conductive adhesive.

By comparison with a magnetic device, current consumption for mobile appliances is reduced by over 95%, there are no magnetic disturbances, and external component requirements are reduced since it can be driven directly by CMOS ICs. Weight is also cut by more than 50% to 0,3 g. Performance remains high and the SPL from a 1 V r.m.s sine wave is 110 ±3 dB at 1 kHz.

This small, lightweight piezo speaker eliminates lead-wires, spring terminals and the other bits and pieces associated with connecting sound receivers to the PCB. These piezo receivers challenge the use of dynamic types, offering easier mounting, lower power consumption and huge space saving, says Murata.
