Full-function audio and signalling processor, with GPS data facility

9 October 2002 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The latest full-function half-duplex audio and signalling processor IC for FRS, PMR446, GMRS and MURS type radios, with added data facilities for global positioning by satellite (GPS), has been launched by CML Microcircuits.

The CMX882 is said to be the ultimate low power single-chip building block for both simple and complex handheld radios. The device is available in 28-pin SSOP and TSSOP packaging and operates from a single 2,7 V rail. Under the control of the host µC, all audio requirements are catered for: voiceband and sub-audio filtering, pre/de-emphasis, compression and expansion, audio routing and global level setting with single or two-point modulation available in the transmit path.

Enhanced CTCSS and DCS encoding and decoding is incorporated. It also facilitates GPS location data transport via a 1200/2400 b/s FFSK/MSK packet data modem incorporating interleaving, FEC, CRC and data scrambling functions.

XTCSS signalling provides more (99) and better squelch privacy codes with the added advantage of 'silent operation'; which means no annoying interference from other users. This signalling format employs both a sub-audio holding tone and in-band (XTC) signalling concurrently, which offers more than twice as many privacy codes as standard CTCSS operation; and completely eliminates interference caused by other traffic on the channel (quiet operation).

XTCSS is fully compatible with both conventional and enhanced CTCSS signalling operations and can implement 'All call' and 'All codes monitor' functions as well as controlling, over air system configuration such as companding, data mode and the future option of voice scrambling.
