Clearing the Static: ESD clothing and footwear

25 August 2021 Circuit & System Protection

While working in an electrostatic protected area (EPA), ESD clothing is necessary to make sure that people do not charge the products they are working with. ESD footwear and clothing prevent static charge from building in an EPA and should be used in conjunction with other grounding devices, such as a wrist strap, cord and ESD surface mats, to provide a continuous path to ground to dissipate any static.

Greg Barron, Actum Group director

ESD clothing ranges include lab coats, jackets, polo shirts, gloves and personal protection equipment. ESD clothing features the universal yellow ESD warning sign to indicate that the personnel are authorised to work in the EPA.

ESD footwear or foot grounders should be worn on both feet to ensure constant contact with the floor. Anti-static shoes can be utilised within industries such as electronics manufacturing, service and repair plants, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, where electronic components and devices are at risk. Conductive ESD boots and shoes are suited to rugged working areas where it is crucial to prevent ESD damage.

Before purchasing ESD clothing and footwear it is important that the supplier can provide you with the necessary certification and/or test these products to ensure they conform to the necessary standards.

Altico Static Control Solutions, a division of Actum Electronics, is the only business in southern Africa which focuses exclusively on the complete control of ESD in the working environment. For more information visit www.actum.co.za or call +27 11 608 3001 to speak to a technical consultant.
