Spring-loaded connectors with rolling ball interface

30 May 2022 Interconnection

The new Omniball spring-loaded connectors from Mill-Max feature a unique rolling ball interface which enables contact to be made between components in axial and non-axial alignment. These connectors are suitable for applications requiring multiple points of contact to be made in both sliding and rotational orientations, and provide optimal electrical, mechanical and structural reliability.

These connectors have replaced the traditional plunger with a gold-plated, brass ball. When engaged, the ball compresses and rolls, allowing the mating surfaces to easily slide parallel to each other while maintaining contact. The force applied by the spring ensures that a consistent electrical contact is maintained. The rolling action prevents binding, premature mechanical wearing and structural failure that traditional spring pin connectors can be prone to in the same applications.

Omniball connectors are offered in single- or double-row configurations and are available in through-hole or surface-mount termination styles. They have a pin spacing of 4 mm with an above-board height of 6,76 mm. Options for threaded inserts are available to provide secure mounting in rugged applications. The insulator material used is Nylon 4/6, which has excellent high-temperature performance, dielectric strength and mechanical toughness. All contacts are gold-plated and meet the specification for contact resistance of 30 mΩ.

These new Omniball connectors are an ideal choice for any application that involves sliding or rotating connections. They can be mounted in vertical or horizontal orientations and are excellent at eliminating cables where circuit board to busbar connections are needed in tight spaces.
