Vicor demonstrates highest power density automotive solutions
29 June 2022
News
As the automotive industry rapidly moves toward full electric vehicles (EVs), power system design engineers are grappling with how to design significantly higher power delivery networks. EVs require up to 20 times more electrical power than a vehicle using a traditional internal combustion engine as they require a proportional size and mass increase for the power electronics. Vicor’s power modules help engineers create high-density power delivery networks for EV, PHEV, HEV and BEVs that are lightweight, efficient and offer an easily scalable platform.
The Vicor BCM6135 is one such power module that has a reduced size and mass. The module, which fits comfortably in the palm of a hand, can supply up to 2,5 kW of power.
At a global automotive engineering event, World Congress Experience (WCX) held on 5 to 7 April 2022, Vicor unveiled three new approaches for powering xEVs. Proven Vicor solutions using their high-density power modules and new power delivery architectures were delivered which can offer up to a 50% reduction in power losses.
Addressing the three top electrification topics, Vicor presentations offered innovative modular solutions that can simplify power system design, and at the same time increase scalability and flexibility. The topics and solutions presented by Vicor were:
• Eliminating the 12 V lead acid battery
An inventive power architecture that replaces the 12 V battery with a “virtual battery,” saving space and mass, and replacing legacy technology. Presenter: Patrick Kowalyk, Automotive Principal Field Applications Engineer.
• The impact of miniaturised power modules on electrification
Power-dense modules combined with innovative power architectures deliver unprecedented design flexibility, scalability and space-savings for xEV development.
Presenter: Greg Green, Director Automotive Customer Programs.
• DC charging station compatibility:
Higher-voltage primary batteries (800 V) create a 400 V charging station incompatibility that can be solved with onboard charging using compact, efficient and bidirectional power modules.
Presenter: Haris Muhedinovic, Automotive Senior Field Applications Engineer.
