NASA’s Valkyrie deployed to an offshore oil rig

NASA’s humanoid robot, Valkyrie, is heading off to Australia to join Woodside Energy for testing purposes aboard an oil rig. The Perth-based energy company running the project hopes to provide NASA with information relating to Valkyrie’s remote manipulation capabilities.
Valkyrie will be used onboard in a remote caretaker role for uncrewed, offshore energy missions, with the data collected to be used by NASA to improve the robot’s technology and boost its robotics programme. The findings will hopefully be able to be used in upcoming Artemis missions (Artemis 2 scheduled for November 2023) and other Earth-based robotic projects.
A key part of NASA’s exploration missions is to use robotic technology to support astronauts with inspection and maintenance tasks, especially in hazardous environments.
