STMicroelectronics has introduced the IIS3DWB10IS, an intelligent MEMS vibration sensor designed for high-performance industrial condition monitoring applications. Combining advanced vibration sensing with integrated edge AI processing, the device enables more accurate equipment health monitoring, while reducing system complexity, power consumption, and maintenance costs.
Built around ST’s MEMS technology and featuring the company’s ISPU 2.0 (Intelligent Sensor Processing Unit), the sensor brings digital signal processing and AI inference directly to the sensing element. This allows real-time analysis of vibration data, enabling faster detection of equipment wear and potential failures before they result in costly downtime.
The IIS3DWB10IS measures vibrations and shocks up to 200g and accurately captures frequencies above 10 kHz, making it suitable for monitoring rotating and oscillating machinery used in manufacturing, automotive production, and other industrial environments. A low noise floor of just 35 µg/√Hz provides performance comparable to traditional piezoelectric sensors, while delivering the benefits of a compact digital solution.
The integrated ISPU 2.0 delivers 40 MIPS and 40 MFLOPS of processing capability, providing up to four times the performance of the previous generation. Hardware accelerators support functions such as FFT analysis, filtering, envelope detection, velocity severity measurement, and anomaly detection, improving AI inference speed, while reducing energy consumption.
Designed for harsh industrial environments, the rugged sensor operates at temperatures up to 125°C and incorporates a 2048 x 80-bit FIFO buffer and integrated temperature sensor. By enabling predictive maintenance and remote condition monitoring, the IIS3DWB10IS helps maximise equipment uptime, improve operational efficiency, and enhance workplace safety.
