The MS5561C from Measurement Specialties is an SMT-hybrid device including a precision piezoresistive pressure sensor and an ADC-interface IC.
It offers pressure resolution of 0,1 mBar and has a footprint of 4,75 x 4,25 mm with a height of 1,6 mm.
The device has an impressive claim to fame: it was used in the Altitrack sport altimeter strapped to Felix Baumgartner’s wrist during his world record setting skydive last year, in which he jumped out of a helium balloon from a height of 39 kilometres, landing 10 minutes later after free falling at speeds up to 1340 kmph for about 4 minutes and then parachuting to the ground.
The module provides a 16-bit data word from a pressure and temperature dependent voltage. It operates from 2,2 to 3,6 V at temperatures from -40°C to +85°C, drawing 4 μA of supply current in operation and less than 0,1 μA in standby. A 3-wire interface is used for all communications with a micro-controller.
