Winstar has released a new greyscale display in the WH1602B series with a wide viewing angle and high contrast ratio.
It comes with a built-in controller IC which is available in either 6800, 4-line SPI or I²C interface options. It can display two lines of 16 characters each and has a display area measuring 66 x 16 mm.
The display features a VATN (Vertical Alignment) display, a form of LCD in which the liquid crystals naturally align vertically to the glass substrates. When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystals remain perpendicular to the substrate, creating a black display between the crossed polariser.
However, when voltage is applied, the liquid crystals shift to a tilted position, allowing light to pass through and create a greyscale display depending on the amount of tilt generated by the electric field. This technology produces a super black background which obviates the need for a black mask.
