A series of electronics technology training sessions was recently hosted in Johannesburg and Cape Town to give local electronics design engineers a glimpse of future products and technologies.
The sessions were presented by eight of the world’s leading technology suppliers to allow local designers and manufacturers to gain first-hand exposure to tomorrow’s technology. It also highlighted trends and illustrated the path that the local electronics manufacturing industry will need to take in order to remain competitive in an increasingly global environment.

Hosted by three of the country’s most influential electronics distributors – Electrocomp, CST Electronics and NuVision Electronics – the ‘SA Best Training Seminar’ brought the country’s top contract and technology manufacturers under one roof, with the organisers’ stated goal of putting the country’s manufacturing industry back on the global map.
“Any time we can get the country’s top design minds together under one roof is a positive step in the right direction,” said Glynn Watkins, director of the Electrocomp Group. “The success of these events clearly illustrates that there is a thirst to learn new ways of becoming competitive. The numbers also illustrate that the South African electronics industry is far from playing dead and rolling over – there is bite in the industry yet.”
Watkins also stated that due to the success of the events, the local hosts are eager to turn the training sessions into annual events. They are also looking at the possibility of broadening the international participation and possibly introducing workshops and other added value for future sessions if the local electronics market so desires.
The events were made possible thanks to the investment and sponsorship of printed circuit board manufacturer Cirtech and contract manufacturer Deman. International sponsors and guest speakers made the trip on behalf of Micrel, Winstar, Renesas Electronics, Silicon Laboratories, Locosys Technologies, Maxim Integrated, GTT Europe and Cinterion/Gemalto.
