High-efficiency buck regulators

4 September 2013 Power Electronics / Power Management

RS Components is now stocking the ADP2384 (4 A) and ADP2386 (6 A) 20 V synchronous step-down regulators from Analog Devices. They integrate low on-resistance power MOSFETS – a 44 mΩ high-side power MOSFET and an 11,6 mΩ synchronous rectifier MOSFET – to provide a high efficiency solution in a compact 168 mm2 solution size.

The devices provide conversion efficiency of greater than 95% with the efficiency profile optimised for low duty-cycle operation. They operate from a wide input voltage range of 4,5 V to 20 V and an output range from as low as 0,6 V up to 18 V with 1% voltage accuracy. Accurate current limit protection allows the use of small external inductors, while external compensation and an adjustable soft-start function provide design flexibility.

The regulators provide a precision-enable input and a power-good output to allow a simple and reliable startup sequence. They use a peak current mode, constant frequency pulse-width-modulation (PWM) control scheme, which offers excellent stability and transient response to minimise output voltage ripple.

The switching frequency of the regulators can be synchronised to an external clock to eliminate beat frequencies between regulators. The devices operate over the –40°C to +125°C junction temperature range, are available in compact 4 x 4 mm 24-lead LFCSP packages, and are pin-to-pin compatible.

These switching regulators target high-performance applications that require high efficiency and design flexibility, such as in communications infrastructure, networking and servers, industrial and instrumentation, healthcare and medical, intermediate power rail conversion, and in DC-to-DC point-of-load applications.

Other key features include under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-voltage protection (OVP), over-current protection (OCP), short circuit protection (SCP) and thermal shutdown (TSD).

The ADP2384 and ADP2386 are available from RS Components for same-day dispatch.
