Repetitive voltage surge suppressors

STMicroelectronics has launched the STRVS series of transient voltage suppressor (TVS) devices which are specified against repetitive over-voltages in high-temperature conditions.

In applications, over-voltage constraints may not always come from lightning, electrical overstress or electrostatic discharge, but from the circuit itself. In such cases, standards do not apply. Repetitive surges may raise protection device temperature. This is why protection devices should be selected according to their power capability at high junction temperatures and their clamping voltage specified at high temperature.

To help engineers protect against repetitive surges that heat up protection components and reduce their performance in power supplies of solar inverters, smart meters or mobile chargers, ST specifies the clamping voltage of its STRVS series at high temperature and for peak current from 0 to 2 A. This saves engineers from deliberately over-sizing protection components.

Data is also provided to help assess the effects of printed circuit board metallisation on temperature; conventional TVS diodes do not provide such information. Moreover, the STRVS clamping voltage is constant for any load, which enhances safety of the protected power components compared with RC snubber protection.

The STRVS series provides effective MOSFET protection against multiple surges at frequencies from 50 Hz to 200 kHz, and is available in SMB surface-mount packages.
