Telkom launches innovation competition

Telkom has issued a call to SMMEs, universities, research institutes, not-for-profit organisations, startups, individual inventors and innovators to enter its new ‘Open Innovation Mega Challenge’.
The stated goal of the competition is to spur the development of innovative products to stimulate and drive broadband growth. Focus areas include, but are not be limited to, convergence, cloud, vertical segment solutions, machine to machine (Internet of Things), and smart buildings and smart cities.
Entrants stand the chance to win a share of a R200 000 prize kitty (R120 000 for 1st, R50 000 for 2nd and R30 000 for 3rd place) as well as two years free DSL internet access. Entries close on 30 November 2013 and winners will be announced at the end of March next year.
Telkom says submissions will be judged on their innovation, feasibility, commercial viability, market appeal, benefit to economic growth and social development, and stimulation of broadband penetration in the market, as well as “any other factor which Telkom may consider relevant”.
