Serial data-logger
29 January 2014, Test & Measurement

When working with or designing products with an RS-232 serial port, monitoring the data sent over that port commonly requires a separate RS-232-to-USB adaptor to a laptop, a break-out adaptor to tap into the communications without destroying the data, serial communication software on the laptop and, not least of all, a prayer that the battery will last long enough to capture the offending data.

To simplify this situation, K Measure has released the SerialGhost serial data-logger which obviates the need for laptops, software, cables and flat batteries. The D-Sub connector is simply connected to the SerialGhost, which then connects to the device whose serial data must be logged.

The device has 2 GB of built-in memory allowing large volumes of serial data to be recorded. When data recording is complete, SerialGhost connects to a computer’s USB port where it is mounted as a normal USB Flash drive, allowing the user to open the log files with a text editor such as Notepad.

Applications include recording data from peripherals like printers, keyboards and mouse, reverse engineering of protocols and data-logging from sensors (e.g. temperature, pressure, voltage).

The logger supports all baud rates up to 115 200 bps and logs both Tx and Rx streams simultaneously. It can be powered from a computer’s USB port or an external power supply, requires no software or drivers to be installed, and is Windows, Linux and Mac compatible.
