NXP proves its NFC credentials

As part of its drive to stake a claim in the nascent market for near-field communications (NFC), NXP Semiconductors demonstrated some innovative practical applications for the technology at January’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas.
For instance, the company’s MIFARE technology was used to add NFC functionality to show visitors’ badges which allowed them to, for example, tap their badges to NFC-enabled smartphones, in order to quickly exchange business credentials and retrieve specific product information from NFC-enabled devices or posters displayed by various exhibitors.
NXP’s MIFARE DESFire EV1 served as the official solution behind the badges. The company partnered with ITN International, CES’s official registration and lead retrieval provider, and SMARTRAC, a leading developer of RFID and NFC inlays.
Another application was the demonstration of a wireless smart lighting network, designed for ease of installation in the home. The demo (pictured) included an energy harvesting switch developed by EnOcean which uses the NXP JN5161 wireless microcontroller and implements the ZigBee Green Power feature.
Using NFC technology, the EnOcean switch can be added to a home network simply by tapping an NFC-equipped mobile phone on the gateway to collect important network parameters, and then using the phone to pass them on to the switch.
Completing the demo were wireless colour LEDs and tuneable white dimmable LED lamps, which can also be added to the network using NFC and then controlled via an Android smartphone. A video of the demo can be viewed at http://youtube/iWKVYO1FlLg.
