Infrared LED mounts flush on PCB

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has succeeded in sinking a surface-mountable infrared (IR) LED in a printed circuit board.
The T-Midled SFH 4140 is ideal for ultra-thin applications requiring an IR transmitter, such as the latest generation of tablet computers and smartphones, which are gaining yet another layer of functionality by replacing traditional in-home remote controls with the combination of onboard IR capability and a suitable companion app.
The flush-mountable, T-shaped LED takes up only 4,6 mm² of board space and emits a powerful focused beam to the side. Its beam angle of ±25 degrees is created by an integrated reflector to cut overall space requirements. The SFH 4140 produces 50 mW/sr as its typical radiant intensity from 100 mA so it achieves the ranges needed for remote control functions. The wavelength of 940 nm is also matched to the requirements of this application.
The component measures 3,1 x 1,5 x 1,5 mm and protrudes just 0,6 mm above and below a 0,3 mm thick printed circuit board.
