Interposer substrate mutes capacitor squeal

Murata’s new ZRB series of monolithic ceramic capacitors (MLCC) are packaged on an interposer substrate designed specifically to reduce acoustic ‘squealing’ noise typically induced by mechanical vibration of the capacitor.
This form of acoustic noise is a concern for the electronics industry and affects many types of consumer electronics devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. A printed circuit board (PCB) can amplify this noise, but by using an interposer substrate the MLCC becomes mechanically isolated from the PCB.
Available in the same size as conventional MLCCs, the part is available in EIA 0402 (1,0 x 0,05 mm) and EIA 0603 (1,6 x 0,8 mm) formats with working voltages of 6,3 V, 10 V, 16 V and 25 V d.c. The company expects this technology to be desirable for replacement parts to update end-application designs without the need for PCB layout modification.
The ZRB series is available in capacitance values of 4,7 μF, 10 μF or 22 μF, with X5R temperature characteristics.
