The power supply design tool PI Expert Suite from Power Integrations is now accessible as a cloud-based app via http://ac-dc.power.com/design-support/pi-expert-suite.
Whereas users previously downloaded the tool to a local PC or workstation, the cloud-based version allows designers to access the tool from any Internet browser, safe in the knowledge that they are always using the most up-to-date version.
PI Expert Suite is a useful tool for slashing the number of prototype iterations required to finish a design. The software generates a complete schematic of the power supply, even specifying the transformer design and offering links to transformer manufacturers. The cloud-based version provides wizard interfaces that help designers’ input specifications and optimise parameters. It then uses real-world data to analyse thousands of design options to determine the most appropriate choice.
A heatsink calculation and optimisation tool provides an estimation of the thermal design requirements for a new power supply, which can be used to guide layout and mechanical prototyping decisions. Enhanced PCB layout recommendations based on the chosen IC device and package allow the designer to minimise trace-induced EMI and board area, and also maximise electrical noise immunity and surge tolerance.
