High-power LEDs for lighting

With the latest generation of its DURIS S 8, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has achieved an efficacy improvement on the order of 17%. This comes courtesy of a new leadframe material and chip generation.
With the same footprint, three versions with different lumen packages are available to match different application requirements. The new S 8 is pin-to-pin compatible with the previous generation so customers can easily find the optimal LED for their lighting application, e.g. omnidirectional and directional retrofits or downlights.
The new part is available with a footprint of 5 x 5 mm and six, eight or 10 chips featuring brightness levels of 375, 500 and 610 lumens. Thanks to the enhanced epoxy-based package, the product versions offer great lumen maintenance even at high currents and temperatures. With a forward voltage in the range of 19 - 32 V (depending on type), simpler and more compact driver designs can be realised. Thanks to these high-lumen packages, a single light source design can be implemented, avoiding multiple shadows and simplifying lens and PCB designs.
Both the six- and eight-chip versions of the LED offer an improved efficacy of 135 lm/W at 3000 K and 150 mA, while the 10-chip version features an efficacy of 131 lm/W at 3000 K and 130 mA. All versions exhibit a colour rendering index (CRI) of 80 and correlated colour temperatures (CCT) between 2700 and 6500 K.
All three versions of the multichip LEDs are colour binned using MacAdam ellipses and are offered in 3-step or 5-step ellipse options to ensure colour consistency in any lighting application. To create realistic application conditions, the LED colour binning is grouped at 85°C instead of at room temperature. Therefore the new product generation is ideal for use in indoor lighting solutions, especially for directional retrofits, spotlights and downlights.
