Scheduled for 23 and 24 June, the Women in Engineering and Innovation Summit will take place in Johannesburg under the tagline “'The Way Forward…Beyond Challenges, Empowerment, Career Advancement, Sustainability, Leadership and Development.”
Organised by Insight Training Consultants, the symposium explores the career experiences of women in engineering and how women negotiate their place in a highly male-dominated profession and perceive discrimination and harassment. “Gender-based stereotyping makes it particularly difficult for females to establish their own career or diverge from the career path,” says the organiser. “We will consider why women are under-represented in this profession; rarely appointed to senior management positions.”
Research shows that women feel isolated within the profession; it seems more pronounced for the few women who reach the top in the setting of the engineering industry. Moving into management is seen as necessary for career success but some women are worried about the negative impacts this may have on work/life balance.
The event has been put together to create a platform where women in the engineering sector can share knowledge, experiences, what worked for them, the best ways to motivate, inspire, lead and succeed in this industry. It will also be a unique opportunity to showcase the significant progress that women in engineering have made in building their profile and leading the way to evolution. It features female speakers from different backgrounds of engineering who will give their insights into how to make a mark in the engineering corporate world as a woman.
The target audience includes all women engineers in the following fields: mining engineers, process control engineers, mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, electrical engineers, extraction metallurgists, mine surveyors, software engineers, biomedical engineers, transport engineers, industrial engineers, project managers, civil engineers, environmental engineers, agricultural engineers, geotechnical engineers, electrical engineers, quantity surveyors, computer engineers, construction managers, electronic engineers, engineering metallurgists, etc.
