Sinetech has launched a locally designed lithium-ion storage system called PowerBank, the latest addition to its Omnipower brand. First unveiled in March at the Solar Show Africa 2016, it is a high-power and compact 48 V, 6,5 kWh energy storage solution capable of being discharged to 80% for approximately 5000 discharge cycles.
One of the major roadblocks facing other lithium-ion battery systems is that they are normally restricted to a certain make and model of inverter; the iconic wall-mounted battery offering from a certain US electric-car manufacturer, for instance, can only be used with the SolarEdge inverter. The PowerBank, on the other hand, can be used with most programmable off-grid, grid-interactive and back-up inverters.
Another major obstacle faced by most of The PowerBank’s competitors is that of limited instantaneous power delivery capability. The PowerBank can easily handle 6,5 kW continuous power draw as well as a 10 kW inrush capability. According to Sinetech, its life cycle cost (±5000 cycles) is approximately R1,85 / kWh compared to that of a high cycle lead-acid battery (±1500 cycles), which is approximately R3,65 / kWh.
The system was designed with aesthetics in mind and is suitable for homes or businesses of any size, whether modern or classic. It is compact and available in an assortment of colours including black, white, red and blue. On the front of the unit is an LCD display showing all important information; the Omnipower logo on the left-hand side of the unit is also illuminated and changes colour according to the state of charge of the battery.
