Compact 750 W power supplies

27 February 2019 Power Electronics / Power Management

The GSP750 series of 750 W continuous / 900 W peak AC-DC power supply units from XP Power come in a low-profile, 1U high chassis with a 10,16 x 25,4 cm footprint. The peak power capability of 900 W for up to 100 ms offers the potential for reduced size and cost in systems employing motors and other electromechanical loads.

Targeting industrial, test and measurement, and healthcare applications, the GSP750 series comprises a trio of models offering output voltages of 12, 24 and 48 V d.c. The 5 V standby supply is rated to 3 A, a key requirement in test and measurement applications and an increasing demand in today’s medical devices.

The extended AC input range, from 80 V to 264 V (300 V for 5 seconds), combined with -40°C to +70°C operation, class B conducted and radiated emissions, the latest industrial and medical immunity standards and global safety agency approvals, makes the product suitable for global use in a vast range of environments.

Another essential requirement when using compact supplies in such applications is the control of audible noise from the cooling fans. To combat this noise nuisance the GSP750 series employs intelligent fan speed control. The fan speed setting is dependent on the input voltage, load and internal power supply temperature, setting the fan speed to one of four states: high, mid, low or off. The fans are always off when the load falls below 50 W, providing silent running and eliminating audible noise during low-load or system standby conditions.

To enable this size and performance combination, the series has end-to-end efficiency in excess of 90% and a very flat efficiency curve across the entire load range. This is enabled by employing resonant topologies throughout the design to minimise electrical noise, and synchronous rectification to further reduce losses.

To facilitate and support system controls and diagnostics, the supply also includes a power-fail signal, signal level on/off control of the output as well as the always-on 5 V standby output to supply system logic. Remote sense and current sharing for up three units are also included as standard.
