Deltronics donates EDA software to UCT

Local EDA (electronic design automation) specialist Deltronics has provided the University of Cape Town, its students and wider community with access to Altium EDA software.
Rob Sterling, CEO of Deltronics said “We have been in talks with UCT for some time to establish the best way forward to provide the university with the tools to offer students a high-quality education in electronics for both under- and post-graduates.”
The new partnership is founded upon provision by Altium of licences for teaching, training material for lecturers and students, and support for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
“We are very happy with this opportunity to add Altium into our undergraduate syllabus and the much improved access to Altium that our post graduates now have,” said UCT’s Simon Winberg. This will further improve our graduates’ preparedness for future careers in designing high-tech systems, and our postgraduates’ productivity in their research projects.
“In addition to building Altium into the third-year courses and more advanced use of the tool in one of the fourth-year courses, we are in the process of planning short courses to help our postgraduates make effective use of the tool; a short course will also be made available to industry professionals for DPD points. Our thanks to Deltronics for collaboration and support in this initiative.”
The agreement means the university has access to more than 50 licences to be used by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department. For teaching, final year projects and academic research the lab is a wonderful facility for system-on-FPGA development.
With access to the Altium software students, lecturers and research assistants can work in a modern design environment. The result is the graduates are familiar with up-to-date tools and the University can foster stronger links with industry.
Deltronics is providing Altium software and FPGA development hardware that will be used to stimulate modern design techniques. Rob Sterling will also be assisting in establishing training programmes. In total, Deltronics has signed an agreement to provide the university with more than R2 million worth of software and hardware.
