Embattled Dina Pule is the Minister of Communications no longer. In his cabinet reshuffle speech on the 9th of July, President Jacob Zuma announced that she will be replaced by Yunus Carrim, the former deputy minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs, as of the 10th of July.

Pule’s roughly 21-month stint at the reigns of the Department of Communications was plagued by accusations of ineptitude, cronyism and corruption, with most of her last few months in office having been more notable for her ongoing war of words with the Sunday Times than for her policies.

Besides his strong political background, Yunus Carrim has a history in journalism and academics. He inherits something of a ‘hot potato’ position as his predecessors of the past several years have come under strong public criticism for not displaying the strong leadership necessary to institute the progressive policies that this country so sorely needs of them.
