ARM launches gambit for 2016’s premium mobile devices

ARM has started 2015 by putting forward its contender to provide the processing power that will be demanded by next year’s lucrative premium mobile device segment.
The company’s ‘premium mobile experience IP suite’ comprises three major components: the brand new Cortex-A72 processor, CoreLink CCI-500 Cache Coherent Interconnect, and Mali-T880 graphics processing unit (GPU). At the time of launch, ARM had already secured more than 10 licensees for the new technology.
The main talking point of this lineup – the Cortex-A72 - is based on the 64-bit ARMv8-A architecture while providing full backward compatibility to existing 32-bit software. It is claimed that it can provide 3,5 times the performance of 2014 devices based on the Cortex-A15 processor, and can deliver a 75% reduction in energy consumption when running at 2014 performance levels.
The CPU is designed for sustained operation within the constrained mobile power envelope at frequencies of 2,5 GHz. This is scalable to higher frequencies for deployment in larger form factor devices, and can be combined with a Cortex-A53 CPU in ARM big.LITTLE processor configurations for even more performance.
Harnessing this processing power is achieved by CoreLink CCI-500, which enables big.LITTLE processing and delivers system power savings thanks to an integrated snoop filter. It delivers double the peak memory system bandwidth and offers a 30% increase in processor memory performance compared to the previous generation CoreLink CCI-400. This enables more responsive user interfaces and accelerates memory intensive workloads such as productivity applications, video editing and multitasking.
Finally, the new Mali-T880 GPU delivers 1,8 times the graphics performance of today's Mali-T760 based devices and a 40% reduction in energy consumption across identical workloads. Native support for 10-bit YUV will provide the fidelity required to deliver premium 4K content.
