SA gets turbo charge for Internet mobility

World Online, a Tiscali S.p.A company, and Ericsson South Africa have jointly launched a new wireless Internet service that the companies claim speeds-up web page downloads by up to five times. Ericsson's WebOnAir product, a first for SA, is being launched by World Online.
According to World Online MD, Graeme Victor, mobile Internet users can now experience faster web page downloads, browsing and e-mail over a wireless connection, drastically reducing call charges. "World Online WebOnAir enables laptop users connecting to the Internet via their mobile phone, to now customise the quality and quantity of information they download from the Internet. This will reduce the amount of data downloaded by up to 86%, resulting in higher data transfer speeds," he explains.
Ericsson SA Director of Customer Solutions, Thomas Soneson says WebOnAir filters out nonessential Internet codes and compresses the data before it is transmitted to end-users. "Users can adapt image quality, colour scale and remove graphical content, background information and unused spaces."
The WebOnAir client software can be downloaded free of charge from http://webonair.worldonline.co.za
