Company secures major international defence equipment orders

IST Dynamics, a division of the IST group, has announced that it has been awarded orders totalling some R50m since the beginning of this year from defence-industry customers abroad for its sophisticated military software products. Among these is a contract for systems development from the Jordanian arms procurement agency.
IST Dynamics is a niche-based developer of embedded software products for the defence sector, with a particular emphasis on military equipment upgrades and training systems. While it is a major supplier to the SANDF, the company says that some 80% of its business is derived from exports to offshore defence forces and equipment manufacturers.
According to Managing Director Kobus Steyn, the business's ability to compete effectively in the international market was based on its strategy of focusing on expertise domains where it had a strong competitive advantage.
Says Steyn: "One of the major trends in the defence market is the increasing demand for equipment upgrades. This trend levels the playing field between the global giants and the smaller players like IST Dynamics, since upgrade requirements are typically unique and therefore not receptive to the standardised products offered by the big companies. IST Dynamics' competitive edge in this environment lies in its inherent flexibility, and its ability to introduce and apply a variety of leading-edge technologies."
