UEC introduces new digital cable STB for the US market

UEC Technologies, the South Africa-based specialist set-top box (STB) solutions provider, and Nagravision, the digital TV and broadband Internet division of the Kudelski Group, have announced the introduction of a new digital cable set-top box intended for the North American cable market. The product, known as the 'Eagle Box' results from a joint product development agreement entered into last year between Nagravision and UEC.
"When we decided to profile the ideal STB platform for our US market, a bottom-up approach was adopted," says John Markey, Chief Marketing Officer for Nagravision. "We commissioned an extensive market research programme in order to establish the real needs of MSOs. We came to the following three conclusions: One - MSOs want ease of implementation and minimum logistical disruptions of head-end infrastructure. Two - STBs comprise a very large investment by any MSO. Thus, price is of paramount importance. Three - Legacy problems resulting from the currently deployed technology are of huge concern.
"In line with Nagravision's objectives, we commenced the design of the Eagle Box late last year," says Francois Stols, Managing Director of UEC. "Our primary objective was to ensure that the product meets all specific US cable market requirements and specifications.
"What sets the Eagle Box apart from most of its competitors," adds Stols, "is the fact that it incorporates all the latest chipsets and technology, thus providing far better cost versus functionality trade-offs, as well as reducing future obsolescence risks to MSOs.
"Although initial manufacturing of the Eagle Box is planned to be done in the UEC plant in South Africa, we anticipate that we might eventually partner with one or more large US-based companies to manufacture, brand and distribute the product," he concludes.
