Marconi wins two-year telecoms supply contract from Transtel

With the award of a two-year supply contract to Marconi Communications South Africa (MCSA), Transtel has signalled that its privatisation process is well advanced and that it is positioning itself to compete in open commercial markets as a second fixed line network operator.
The supply contract covers PDH (plesiochronous digital hierarchy) multiplexer and DMP (digital multiservice platform) high capacity equipment within an XMP1 transmission system that is designed to cater for the telephone network requirements of densely populated urban environments, typically business parks. It follows a three-year frame contract during which time MCSA supplies 450 PDH multiplexers into the Transtel network.
"The XMP1 transmission system is designed to give flexible solutions for all applications in the PDH range up to 34 Mbps for both established and new network operators," says George Debbo, Technical Director of MCSA. "Exceptionally modular, XMP1 systems allow arbitrarily meshed networks to be set up and operated in an easy and clear form. The DMP installation not only provides additional services and greater capacity, but allows the system configuration, monitoring and control to be performed from a higher order network mangement system, such as the Open NSš system that we have already installed for Transtel in the main centres countrywide."
The new equipment will also enable Transtel to upgrade the telephone services that it provides countrywide to Transnet. The objective of the Open NSš integrated network management system installed by Marconi prior to the award of the PDH and DMP supply contract is to significantly improve reliability and optimise the bandwidth utilisation of Transtel's countrywide communications network.
