Device invented to help prevent travel blood-clot death

Amtec Medical, Antrim, UK, has developed a portable device that uses a simple, noninvasive test to search for the presence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and which may help long-haul air passengers avoid potentially fatal blood-clots.

The Venometer machine can provide an objective evaluation of the presence of lower limb DVT. Following reported incidents of DVT recently after long flights, Amtec's new product may be a simple and low cost way to prevent DVT.

The new Venometer calf stimulator, which is expected to be launched later this year, is designed to stimulate the leg muscles to promote blood flow. The machine uses plastic pads which emit electrical impulses. This forces the calf muscle to contract and pump blood through the leg.
