New power storage technology

A unique patented electrochemical 'energy storage' technology was launched this month at a ceremony at Stellenbosch University. The vanadium redox battery (VRB) was developed by Eskom together with Vanteck, Highveld Steel & Vanadium and Stellenbosch University. The developers believe the VRB will have a huge impact on the power industry in South Africa, capable of providing essential uninterruptible power systems. The technology can provide economical power to the national grid in response to sudden peaks in demand. VRB is safe and has a low ecological impact, according to the group. It uses conducting plastic electrodes and contains no heavy metals such as lead, nickel or zinc.
